Im reading the book of Nahum in the bible (obvi) and I only read the first 6 verses of the first chapter and I've gotten to much out of it already! lol
Its not necessarily for me. But just the commentary my bible gives is awesome!
OKAY,
Nahum 1:3 -
3 The Lord is slow to anger but great in power;
the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.
His way is in the whirlwind and the storm,
and clouds are the dust of his feet
Now, most of us know this. The Lord our God is slow to anger and His word tells us to possess that same characteristic. This is a given.
But this scripture explains a lot ...
You know how people ask "Well if God really is all powerful and nice and loving, why does he let so much evil in the world...blah blah & whatever else?"
I feel like this scripture pretty much answers that question. lol
The commentary in my bible says this
"They dont realize that because God is slow to anger, he gives his true followers time to share his love and truth with evildoers. But judgement will come, God will not allow sin to go unchecked forever. When people wonder why God doesn't punish evil immediately , help them remember that if he did, none of us would be here. We can all be thankful that God gives people time to turn to him"
This sort of kind of blows my mind, maybe my mind just wasn't open wide enough to take this in as common sense, but what the heck? We were ALL BORN SINNERS. We all fall short of the glory of the Lord. If were gonna sit around and say that all the evil stuff in the world should be banished right this second, we better be prepared for judgement because we ourselves are technically evil. Were all sinners, whether its Kony, Hitler, sexual immorals or idol worshippers. We all do it!!
Thats just crazy to me. lol
Another thing is that when those people ask that question, I feel like their picking and choosing Gods character to benefit them.
It is a part of Gods character to be a gentlemen and to be all knowing and all powerful JUST AS MUCH as it is a part of his character to be slow to anger & great in power. You cant put God in a box and limit him to being ONLY all-knowing or all powerful and forget that he still has a plan to erase all sin and wvil from the earth, Hes not playing us, like "mwuahaha im going to let evil rule the world and the earth and pretend i dont see it" NO. God knows, hes loving and hes going to come soon to get rid of all of it.
So if they are questioning him and saying He is hypocritical because hes a "mean god" because he lets evil dwell, then they arent fully grasping the fact that thats just how loving He is, to ALL of us, hes slow to anger because he wants to give those who follow him a chance to bring those "evil-doers" back to Him.
Thats just my two cents ;)
& how I think Nahum answered some important apologetic questions.
Now i'll go finish reading the first chapter! lol
SHA-LOM.
